The United Kingdom’ defense ministry has awarded 30 million pounds contract to develop a high power laser weapon.
The weapon will direct energy at various distances to destroy targets such as drones, missiles, mortars, and roadside bombs. The technology demonstration will is expected on 2019.
Peter Cooper, representative from UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DTSL) said,”this could provide a more effictive response to the emerging threats that could be faced by UK armed forces”.
Pentagon and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are also researching on Laser weapons. They are expected to be online in mid or late 2020’s.
Moreover, US navy has developed Laser weapon system called AN/SEQ-3. It was installed on USS Ponce for real field testing in 2014. US navy said the system is in perfectly working condition. Also, the Ship is authorized to use it as a defensive weapon.
Laser weapon emits highly focused energy and transfers it to the target to destroy it. Nicolas Tesla first worked on directed-energy weapon in early 1900s. Tesla also wrote a paper titled “The Art of Projecting Concentrated Non-dispersive Energy through the Natural Media concerning charged particle beams”.
