Few capitals have mountains this close. The Margalla Hills rise straight out of Islamabad’s northern sectors, and a network of well-marked trails climbs through pine and scrub forest to viewpoints over the city — easy family walks, steep morning climbs and everything between.
These are Islamabad’s best-loved trails and viewpoints. Start early, carry water, and keep an eye out for monkeys, leopards’ tracks and the occasional wild boar.
Trail 5 (Dara Janglan)
One of the most popular Margalla Hills hikes, starting near Dara Jangla, a moderate climb of about 90 minutes past a freshwater stream, a small waterfall and springs. There are tea and pakora stalls along the way; watch out for monkeys.
Trail 3 Start Point
The start of Trail 3, Islamabad's most popular Margalla Hills hike, from Margalla Road in F-6. It's a steep, rocky climb of about an hour to the viewpoint, with a tuck shop and wide views over the city; stay off the fire trails and take water.
Margalla Hills Islamabad View Point
A viewpoint on Pir Sohawa Road high in the Margalla Hills with a sweeping view over the whole of Islamabad, best at sunset. It's calm and green, with a restaurant nearby.
Trail 4 and Dhok Jeevan Start Point
The start of Trail 4 on Pir Sohawa Road, a quieter, mostly shaded 5–6 km Margalla Hills hike through dense forest with a selfie point and the Talhar viewpoint. It's moderate, with a harder middle section for beginners.
Trail 7 Starting Point
The start of Trail 7, reached from Iran Avenue — a quieter, moderate Margalla Hills hike with scenic views but little shade. There are no shops or water on the way, and some forks lead to dead ends, so go with someone who knows it.
Trail 2 Alternate Start Point
An easy 1.5 km trail, about 30–40 minutes, from near the Japanese Children's Park up to the Daman-e-Koh viewpoint, good for families and beginners. Wear long sleeves for the insects, take water, and avoid hiking it alone.
