Gujranwala has two reputations: it produces champion wrestlers, and it feeds them. The city sits on the GT Road between Lahore and the north, and generations of travellers have learned to stop here rather than push on — because the tikka, chargha and fried fish are better than anything waiting further up the motorway.
This is a meat-first city and it makes no apology for it. The food streets at Bakhtay Wala and Nanakpura run late, the tikka shops char over open coals, and breakfast means hareesa with a glass of doodh patti. Come with an appetite that matches the local reputation.
Bakhtay Wala Food Street

The city's main eating strip — tikka, tawa roast, burgers and fish along one busy run. Best after dark.
Hayattiyan Tikka shop

Charcoal tikka done the Gujranwala way: hard sear, plenty of salt, and naan to wrap it in.

Haji Allah Rakha Tikka Shop
A GT Road institution that travellers plan their stops around. Chirras and tikka, cooked fast and hot.
Shahbaz Tikka شہباز تکہ

Famous for its chirras — juicy, charred and worth the queue across its branches.
Nanakpura Food Street

The breakfast street. Hareesa, paya, naan and doodh patti from early morning until the pots run out.
Biryani House

A GT Road biryani stop locals rate above the chains. Generous rice, proper masala.
Bao Saeed Burger Point
The city's shami-and-anda burger benchmark, made to order at a counter that never seems to close.
Naan Magicians
Fresh naan and roghani straight off the tandoor — the accompaniment every other item here needs.
Dubai Mandi Restaurant

Mandi rice and slow-cooked lamb eaten the traditional way. A change of pace from all the charcoal.
Pind Restaurant Rooftop
Village-styled setting on the GT Road, good for a sit-down family dinner with desi mains.
Grill Cafe Rahwali
Grilled sandwiches, burgers and fast food on the cantonment side — dependable and quick.
Gujranwala

Whole marinated chicken, steamed then deep-fried until the skin blisters. The dish the city travels on.
Chowk Niamat Sweet Shops

Barfi, gulab jamun and — in winter — gajar ka halwa sold hot by weight.
