Gilgit is the capital and largest city of Gilgit-Baltistan, set in a broad valley near where the Gilgit and Hunza rivers meet. A former stop on the ancient Silk Road, it is today a junction on the Karakoram Highway with roads to Skardu, Chitral and China, and the base for many trekking and climbing trips into the Karakoram.
