Hunza is a mountain valley on the Karakoram Highway north of Gilgit, and Karimabad, once called Baltit, is the capital of Hunza District. Near the town stands Baltit Fort, the palace-fort of the valley’s old rulers and on UNESCO’s World Heritage tentative list since 2004, while Altit Fort, their earlier seat, stands nearby in Altit.
