Khaplu is the main town of Ghanche District, on the Shyok River 103 km east of Skardu, and was once the seat of the Yabgo rulers of a Baltistan kingdom. Visitors come for the 19th-century Khaplu Palace, the centuries-old Chaqchan Mosque, and as a base for treks into the Hushe Valley towards Masherbrum.
